The permission given to the demons to tempt us is necessary for our success. When they hinder our prayer, they force us to learn how to of become especially proficient in the use of this weapon. The weapon prayer destroys the fiery sword of the cherubim who guards the way to the tree of life, and the victor becomes a communicant of eternal life." According to the unutterable wisdom of God, "evil helps the good, even though the intention be evil." In our solitude and during our exercise in prayer, when we suddenly feel the roiling of sensual passions, when impure thoughts attack us, and when sinful images inscribe themselves on our minds with vivid, enticing clarity-these are the signs of the demonic attack. That is not the time for despair; that is not the time for lassitude; that is the time for labor. Let us rebuff the enemies through the redoubling of our prayer to God, and He will scatter and expel our enemies.
